It is a term gained for a show that has an obsessive or even extreme future(a) a show that might not have been appreciated when it was first broadcast and is a step away from the mainstream. There is no single quality that characterizes a cult text rather, cult texts are defined through a process in which shows are positioned in opposition to the mainstream (Jancovich, Hunt 2004). Reflection on teaching - Research Paper ExampleTransformation learn theory remains a utilizable tool in designing adult education. Transformative learning theorists such as Edward Taylor, Patricia Cranton, Robert Body, and Robert Kegan have contributed greatly to the field of education. Their works identified factors that characterize transformative learning. They pointed the challenges face by educators in transformational learning environments. Their contribution to the transformational theory enhanced adult education. This reflective essay focuses on the contribution of the above theorists in enhancing adult education. Understanding the core of transformative learning is crucial since it enables us to consider how incompatible adult teaching approaches work. I realized that the term transformational is used in different concepts to refer to regard adult learning based on the nature of human communication. Jack Mezirow, who developed the theory of transformative learning in 1 978 appreciated the importance of reflection in learning. As we grow, we experience different situations, which change our perspectives (Taylor & Cranton, 2012). I had never realized the effects the different experiences have on our views. However, the transformational learning theory empowered me to understand that the different experiences accumulate and are the raw materials for transformation learning which occurs during adulthood. ... Based on the difference, the learner is able to make appropriate decision or changes. In my understanding, transformative learning encompasses trying to solve an existing problem using a new approach. It enables learners to expand their conscientiousness. During transformative learning, the learners become witting of the different selves within their psyche. Additionally, the learners become aware of their expectations and assumptions as well as those of other and interpret them to assess their relevance. .By assessing other peoples perspectives, the student learns to accept other people views. Studies on transformative learning have been used in altering learning environments to enhance adult education. Adult learners can be taught using different methods. Edward Taylor, a renowned indorser of transformative leaning, argued that the learning environment determined the level of openness demonstrated by learners. I agree with this since I also learn differently in different environment. Taylor argued that ideal leaning conditions should encourage students autonomy and participation. Additionally, Taylor described effective instruction methods as those that promote learner centered teaching approach (Taylor & Cranton, 2012). Recent approaches on transformative learning emphasize on learning through intuitive and unconscious processes. Patricia Cranton is one theorist who has studied the role of intuitive and unconscious process in decision-making. Crantons views on informative learning helped me appreciate the role of reflec tion in learning. It is sitting back to contemplate on ones views, compare them with those of others and

Terrorism Today Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Terrorism Today - Research Paper ExampleAccording to the US Department of Defense terrorism is delimitate as an unlawful action that is intended to create a intelligence of fear or to intimidate governments and the commonplace public in order to build political, religious and ideological goals (The Face of Terrorism, 2007). Todays terrorist organizations work in groups which are in turn interlinked to form a wide terrorist network. Small groups of terrorist cells which are part of a larger group are trained and sent all over the world. In some cases, different terrorist networks or organizations work together to carry bug out an attack. All the networks work under a leader who instructs and decides on the activities of the terrorist network (Global Terrorism, n.d). Terrorists could be non state players with a transnational support such as the Al-Qaeda, cells which hire regional or international links or individual independent terrorists who are not affiliated to any organizatio n (The Face of Terrorism, 2007). Terrorism is a premeditated act and it is carried out based on political, religious or ideological motives. In most cases political authority, which determines the social and economic status of a country, are the major causes for a terrorist attack (Creekmore, 2007). The recent 9/11 attacks stand proof for the power of terrorist organizations to carry out an attack in a developed and super power country like the States. The major objective behind the attacks was to expose the vulnerability of a country such as America and to create a sense of fear and chaos among the general public (The Face of Terrorism, 2007 Creekmore, 2007). The bombings not only targeted the public but also the US armament forces. Minor going awayes of military forces by a terrorist attack will not only expose the vulnerability of the forces but would also result in wider media coverage and diminish the public and political support for military operations. Hence terrorist organ izations do not directly challenge the government instead they would target the general population in a manner that would change their perception of the effectiveness and capabilities of their government. They also carry out their operations in a manner that would ward off the effect of the strength of the target forces as exemplified by the sudden attacks on 9/11 (The Face of Terrorism, 2007). Though the 9/11 attacks resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and property, if nuclear devices or bio warfares were used in the attacks the destruction could have been of a larger magnitude and would have definitely undermined the basic sense of security within the country (Carter, 1998). In addition to the loss of lives and damage to property such terrorist attacks have also have a negative clash on the economy of the country. The 9/11 attacks had a significant impact on the trading and stock markets with both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ unappealing for a week after the attacks. When the markets reopened the stock market index had fallen by 684 points and the stock loss was estimated at $1.2 trillion dollar for that week. Apart from companies in the US which suffered huge losses, companies across the world which traded with the US also lost significantly. The airline industry was the most effected after the attacks which have even resulted in many airline companies filing for

This has greatly been facilitated through creation of Special Economic Zones where foreign companies which atomic number 18 willing to build modern factories hire cheap dig up, and are exempted from taxes, leaving it to the government to build roads and other infrastructure needed (Faigley & Jack 394).The big elephant phenomenon has been mainly due to the removal of barriers to the flow of capital from abroad. This has led to the rise of very effective and internationally competitive softwares and IT, together with the influx of multinational corporations like Starbucks and MacDonalds, which have several branch es in these two countries, thus elevating the rustic from the crisis of 77% living on 2$ a day. The Simulation Project Essay Example for Free
The Simulation Project EssayMultinational corporations face many challenges in their home(prenominal) and global environss. According to Ajami, Cool, Goddard, and Khambata a multinational firm is unitary in which a certain percentage of the earnings, assets, sales, or personnell of a firm come from or atomic number 18 deployed in foreign locations (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 6). According to this definition US Air delegacys Group would be classified as a mulitnational firm. On Fortune 500s Worst List, US Airways Group is identified as a least admired partnership on all eight attri exclusivelyes identified by the enquiry and surveys performed by Hay Group (Best worst in, 2006). As the name implies US Airways Group lives in the Airline industry. This paper allow discuss how g everywherenment regulations, baffling and oerstuffed technologies, some political-legal barriers, sociocultural factors and two economic theories that are faced by US Airways Group are affected by their domestic and global purlieus. It will similarly offer a strategy for US Airways Group to countinue its growth and success as an industry troikaer. As indicated from its name the domestic environment of this company is the fall in States and the global environment that will be used is rib Rica. In the US the airline line of products industry has two main agencies that spell out regulations that it has to obey. The federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) (Electronic Code of federal Regulations, 2012). Although the airline industry was de-regulated in 1978 the DOT retains the authority to alter or amend any airlines certificate or to revoke such certificate for intentional failure to comply with the terms and conditions of the certificate (10-K, 2012). The FAA is amenable for writing the regulations that relate to aircraft maintenance and operations, certification of pilots and flight crewmembers and air traffic and generaloperating rules (Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, 2012). A nonher other agency that establishes guidelines that the airline industry has to abide by is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).The EPA is responsible for regulating operations, including air carrier operations, which affect the quality of air in the United States (10-K, 2012). US Airways Group has to follow all the realised regulations created by the FAA, DOT and EPA if it wants to remain in business in the United States. They have to keep cutting-edge with the maintenance requirements and keep accurate records as established by the FAA and continue to have their aircraft inspected at regular intervals as prescribed by the FAA (Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, 2012). They must ensure they follow EPA guidelines regarding air quality, while continuing to meet the DOT requirements for operating at efficiency or risk having their certificates revoked to do business as hearty. In r ib Rica, the disposal is based on Roman law, which is very different from the US legal system (Doing Business in Costa Rica 2012 Country Commercial Guide for U.S. Companies, 2012). The ways the laws are written is how they are applied and there is little to no room left for interpretation by anyone regarding the laws. Therefore the way that the government regulations that US Airways Group must follow are written are the way that they must be followed. The government has established travel guidelines that must be followed there, the most classic being that currently you are not permitted to enter Costa Rica unless you have a roundtrip ticket (Costa Rica, 2012). The easiest way for US Airways to avoid an issue regarding this regulation is to ensure that all travelers going to Costa Rica have a roundtrip ticket when they board the plane in their divergence city, along with valid identification. Hard technology includes the physical hardware, capital goods, blueprints and specificatio ns, and knowledge necessary to use the hardware, while soft technology encompasses the management, marketing, financial organization, and administrative techniques that stinkpot be combined with the hard technology to serve the call for of the use (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 358). establish on this definition some of US Airways hard technologies would be their aircraft (planes), hubs (airport locations) and so far their flight crews. The planes that are currently in the fleet are manufactured by Boeing, Airbus and Embraer (US Airways Fleet, 2013) and some are equippedwith the ACSSs XS-950 Mode S Transponder which allows for the transmission of information regarding the planes position, speed and intent (Press Releases, 2012). They have hubs in the four US cities and have established a partnership with hero Alliance (US Airways A Star Alliance Member, 2013), which gives them access to a hub at Londons Heathrow Airport as well. The flight crew has the knowledge to o perate the aircraft as well operate the terminals efficiently within the hubs. It is the flight crews responsibility to ensure that the passengers are on board the plane on while and that the plane departs the door on time. The soft technologies currently employed by US Airways includes their Nuance interactive voice response (IVR) system, which was one of their new marketing tools to help sign customer frustrations (Interactive Case Study US Airways, 2013), audits of customers airport experiences (Sunnucks, 2010), and training on the other new systems that have been devoured to help with customer satisfaction. Just as flight crews can be classified as hard technology the management staff of US Airways can be classified as soft technology because it is their responsibility to capture sure that the customers are kept happy and that they use their administrative talents to keep the employees satisfied as well. If US Airways continues to educate, value and regard as it employees, while using new technology to keep up-to-date with the rest of the industry and survey its customers for satisfaction their success will continue to improve. unrivalled of the political-legal barriers that US Airways Group will face in the US and Costa Rica the differences in the legal system as identified earlier. In the US the laws are interpreted and judges look at past fibres to help decide how to rule on a current case, in Costa Rica judges look at the law the way it is written and make their rulings based on the way the law is written. If US Airways is not careful and does not fully understand the laws and how they are written in Costa Rica this could be detrimental to their operations there. In the US they not only have to comply with federal laws but domain laws as well that have been established. Although both governments are classified as democracys, the US has what the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) refers to as a federal republic and Costa Rica has a democratic rep ublic (The World Fact Book, 2012). In Costa Rica they promote a political environment based on inclusion. One of their political parties is PartidoAccesibilidad Sin Exclusin (PASE) which translated into English is Accessibility without Exclusion Party (Obando, 2013) however the US is not necessarily an inclusion-based society. The US does have laws regarding accessibility for individuals with disabilities and they are taken very seriously, Costa Rica is not as readily as accessible as one would think they would be based on their inclusion-based political system. For US Airways to continue to be successful in the US and Costa Rica concerning the political-legal environments within those countries they should remember the history of close and friendly relations based on respect for democratic government, human freedoms, free trade, and other shared values (World-Country Profiles US Department of State Background Note, 2007), this falls in line with the thought of the classical theory of trade (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 48). Geert Hofstede developed his theory of the louvre dimensions of culture, based on information provided to him by IBM regarding employee values in their survey of more than 70 countries between 1967 and 1973 (National cultural dimensions, 2013).The five dimensions of culture as theorized by Hofstede are social orientation, power orientation, uncertainty orientation, goal orientation and time orientation (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 213). The five dimensions are broken down into simple terms as social orientation reflects a persons beliefs about the importance of the individual over the group for which they belong power orientation deals with how one views authority and power differences in a hierarchy uncertantiy oreintation refers to how one feels regarding change goal orientation deals with how one is motivated towards achieving goals and the fifth and final dimension time oreintation refers to the how in dividuals in a culture adopt an outlook of long or short term regarding life, make water and other issues (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 213-214). In regards to the sociocultural aspects related to these dimensions of culture as identified by Hofstede there are many that are different as well as some that are equal for these two countries. One of the biggest differences between the two countries is their attidudes towards time. People in the US are all about time and money whereas people in Costa Rica want to take their time and really understand what is happening. The attitudes towards work and lesiure follow suit with the attitudes towards time. Many in the US do nottake vacation time off because things need to get done, whereas Costa Ricans are more concerend with spending time with their families and socializing with friends (Provasi, 2012). The attitudes regarding change, natural things, and jobs are also at opposite ends of the spectrum. These things are importan t to most Americans and they look at these things as a way to build themselves up. Costa Ricans on the other hand look at these things and will be just as comfortable with keeping things just they way they are. Aspects that are similar in the two countries are literacy rate and education mix. Both coutries hold these items in high regard and try to come up with ways to elevate the young people to stay in school and continue with their education and pursue higher education as well. Another item that is similar is their unclouded door policy in the work place, managers are accessible at all levels and this makes it very familiar. The two economic theories that will be compared and contrasted are Walt Whitman Rostows Stages of Economic Growth and John Kenneth Galbraith Equilibrium of Poverty for the domestic and gloabal economic environments identified above for US Airways Group. The US has a mixed economic environment and is classified as a first world country. The reason the US does not blend into one specific economic environment is it has characteristics of capitalism in which the relationship of supply and demand dictates price and it also has elements of a free-market rescue in which the government establishes laws and policies to ensure public expertty and welfare (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 59). Costa Rica has a social market economic system (Rojas, 2006) and is classified as a thrid world country (Rosenberger, 2012). A social market economy is similar to a free-maket economy in that it upholds free market components such as private property and ownership of businesses and industry, free price formation, market competition and free trade, while also utilizing government regulation to create fair market competition by preventing market monopolies, ensuring ongoing economic development and poverty alleviation (Social Market Economy, 2013). Based on the definitions provided it can be said the both economies are similar in regards to gover nment regulations being involved in creating a fair and safe market environment. Walt Whitman Rostow identified five economic layers of growth in which a country could fall traditional society, transitional stage, takeoff, drive to maturity and the age of voltaic pile consumption (Ford,2004).Each stage represents a stepping stone to for the next stage. According to Rostow the US surpassed the age of intensity consumption in the late 1950s (Ferraro, 1960), Costa Rica however is still in the takeoff stage. This stage is marked by major transformations that stimulate the economy (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 55). For US Airways Group, in Costa Rica this is identified by their growth in the technological area (more flights operated) as well as more jobs being created due to the increase in flights. Although in the US this stage has been surpassed, US Airways contiunes to grow in this aspect because they are change magnitude flight schedules. Galbraiths view of economics is similar to that of Rostow, in that economic growth is as much a change in social, intellectual and policatical as well as physical (material) change (Watson, 2011). According to both of their economist views the US operates as a capitalistic economy. This is true of US Airways in the way that they have been able to turn-around their business since 2005. They actually took into consideration things that would make the consumers happy, not necessarily increasing their capacity (i.e. putting more seats on a plane), in doing so they were able to keep up with the consumers wants and still provide the overhaul that was needed (Smith, 2012). This falls into Galbraiths view that the major affirmative purpose of the firm is corporate growth (John Kenneth Galbraiths Contributions to Economics, 2013). This view is similar to Rostows age of mass consumption in that both concentrate on the high standards of living (i.e. comfort in travel on the plane) that have been established as a result of the efforts set forth is their respective stages.Where the two differ dramatically is that Galbraith counts that the companies direct the consumers wants by advertising that makes the consumers desire certain products or work, and that therefore the economy is more driven by the seller and not the consumer (John Kenneth Galbraiths Contributions to Economics, 2013). In this instance though, that concept contradicts his idea of the major affaimative purpose of the firm is corporate growth in the example provided regarding US Airways above. In successfully industrializing a poor economy such as Costa Ricas, Galbraiths Equilibrium of Poverty offers the idea of the accredited infrastructure system (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 57). This idea simply means that the country would need to have a relieablesystem of roads, ports, electrical power supplies and communications (Ajami, Cool, Goddard, Khambata, 2006, p. 57). In this case US Airways already has access to these it ems at the airport and therefore is well on its way to helping the economy grow and prosper. While both Rostow and Galbraith believe that governement need to be invovled in the initial stages to help third world countries establish themselves and help to protect their citizens they also understand that there will be a time when the government will need to step back and let the companies in the different industries takeover and control their own destinies so to speak.Rostow does not mention how or when he thinks this should be done, however Galbraith says that he feels that governments should impose taxes on consumer goods and services, using the proceeds to increase the availability of public sector goods and services (John Kenneth Galbraiths Contributions to Economics, 2013). In doing this, he is trying to show that eventually there has to be a point where control is given to the companies and they only need to answer to the governments when essential or necessary. US Airways Grou p has made significant improvements in seven of the eight-attribute areas identified On Fortune 500s Worst List 2006. On the 2011 list they still have a ranking on the worst product quality attribute of number 11, which is down from 10. US Airways Group needs to figure out ways to improve the quality of their service as well as their products. Although they may not have much control over the service aspect because the flight schedule cab be delayed because of an airline from another company they can control they products. They can invest in newer planes, upgrade/update their current planes and even update their hubs in the airports that they currently operate in. Other ways for the company to continue to grow and succeed in the domestic and global environments are they must continue to improve their offerings. They are off to a great start by taking surveys and asking customers what is important to them. They need to go a step further and ask the employees what is important to them, what will keep them loyal to US Airways Group. Take what they learn from the employees and the implement changes that are suggested. Continue to ask the customers what they like, do not like, what other features they would like to see in the airports, on the planes and in the air. I think one thing that the company should do is take a lesson from Southwest and stop charging baggage fees for the first checked bag. They should eliminatechange fees, and if someone needs to cancel their trip completely, implement a cancellation fee, but refund the difference between the ticket price and the cancellation fee. By eliminating their fees they will draw more passengers to the airline and increase sales, because people will not feel as if they are being taken advantage of. In todays economy this will go far with consumers and could lead to even bigger profits in the end, because they will feel that US Airways Group is a company that is not just looking out for themselves but for their custome rs as well.As demonstrated there are several different environments that a multinational corporation must take into consideration when exploring new opportunities. The government regulations, hard and soft technologies, political-legal barriers, sociocultural factors and economic theories that a company faces and how they handle each of those environments will determine if they will succeed or fail. Walt Whitman Rostow and John Kenneth Galbraiths economic theories can be used by companies to help determine if the global environment that is being considered will be a good fit with the domestic environment of the parent company. Once the location has been setup and establishe the company must realize that the work does not stop there, they must always examine and remember they want to continue to grow so they need to ask the question what do we do to contiune to prosper or what do we do to make it so we do prosper.Bibliography10-K, A. Current Issues in Law and HR Course Work Essay Example for Free
Current Issues in Law and HR Course Work EssayOrganizations atomic telephone number 18 considered to be the most incentive, social ar valuement of today. Its considered a marvel to know that thousands of people with item-by-item backgrounds, skills and interests ar coordinated into various boldnesss, so that they can come after their commons institutionalized goals and objectives. The historians of the future see todays system of ruless as the greatest come acrossment of our time and era. For utilization biogenetic engineering have had more or less breakthroughs. The Apollo mission to the moon was made possible by the organization called NASA. Even on day to day basis organizations play an important usance in our lives. The water we drink to the food we eat or the clothes we wear all comes from different kinds of organizations Human resource is defined by many companies as a combination of the administrative functions with the death penalty of the fellowships employ ees and their relations along with the bon tons prep. Human resource basically develops mostly from industrial and organizational behaviour. The major function that ar accommodated in HRM are recruitment, selection, training and development, penchant, placement, separation, career prep, performance appraisal, salaries and hires, incentives and gain-sharing, benefits, services and security and employee relations and assessment. The term gracious resource basically refers to the people of the gild. The manager of the federation engages in HR because the HR activities and tasks are considered to be an important part of the company. It basically changes the company to achieve the goals and the objectives that are set for them by the centering. As you all know that human resource activities also make a large contribution to the companys success in many ways but the HR activities mostly support the strategies of the organization. The HR part basically exists to support the man agers and the employees of the company and to pursue the companys goal or objectives (Werther Davis 1996). The major challenges that would be faced by the organization are as follows Population-growth challenges Global Competitive Challenges Unemployment Challenges Social Responsibility Challenges Medical, Food, caparison Challenges Unknown Challenges Ethical Challenges Workforce Diversity Challenges The objectives of the HR department are based on societal, organizational, functional and personal goals. It is known that the objectives of the company are non formally stated that is they are non in the written form. The objective of the human resource management not only reflects the intention of the middle and realize management but also balances the challenges that are faced by the HR department. Objectives are basically considered as benchmarks against which the actions can be evaluated. The human resource objectives not only reflect the intention of the management but also balance the organizational challenges, the HR function and the people who are affected by it. If the company fails to succeed in its objectives it would harm the companys profits, performance and even the survival of the firm. As we know that there are four objectives that are common to the HR management. The objectives are as follows 1. Organizational Objective which basically recognizes that the HR management exists and it contributes to the organizational operationiveness. The HR department basically exists so that it can friend managers of the company to achieve the objectives and goals of the company. HR management only supports the managers with the human resource issues. If we put is simply the HR department only exist solely to help assist the rest of the company. 2. Functional Objective which basically states that this objective solely exists to maintain the departments scuttlebutt at a level that is considered germane(predicate) to companys needs. A relation exist s between the objectives and the HR activities and they are appraisal of the employee, placement and assessment of the employee.3. Societal Objective this objective shows that the company has to be ethically and socially responsive to the needs and challenges of the society while the company minimizes the negative impacts of such demands on the organization 4. Personal Objective shows that the HR management helps assisting the employees in achieving their goals and objectives. And these goals enhance the individuals contribution towards the organization. To achieve these goals the HR department help the managers of the company to obtain, maintain, utilize and retain the right amount and types of workers. The objectives of the employees essential be met otherwise the employees would not be motivated, retained and maintained by the HR department of the company. And the employees would neglect their farm outs, voice their complaints or maybe leave the organization for a better opportu nity (Werther Davis 1996). It is not necessary that all the organization can meet the HR objectives every time. Some sort of trade-offs do issue forth that stops the company in achieving the stated goals and objectives. When the objectives are net by the department, they make a bulky contribution towards the organizations and employees needs. And with the help of these objectives the managers are able to see the kinds of activities that are needed to be carried out and why. There is a relationship that exists between the objectives and the activities of the HR. For example, for the societal objective the supporting activities would be statutory compliance, union and management relations and benefits of the employees. For the organizational objective the supporting activities would be HR planning, employee relations, selection, training and development, appraisal, placement and assessment. For functional objective the supporting activities would be performance appraisal, placement, assessment and development of the employees. And for personal objective the supporting activities would be training and development, performance appraisal, placement, assessment and compensation of the employees. The HR activities are considered as actions that are taken by the department to maintain a workforce balance that is considered as appropriate to the organizations needs. For example, small companies who do have the HR department have small budgets and small staffs therefore the HR department of such companies only focus on the activities that they consider are important for the company. The functions or activities that are considered important for such companies would be planning, recruitment, and wages and salaries of the employees. The functions that are performed by the HR department of the organization are as follows Planning is the first activity that is conducted by the department.Planning can be defined as the systematic forecast that determines the companys futur e and the demand and supply of the employees that would be needed by the organization. HR planning is also known as employees planning which helps the HR department and other managers of the company to develop staffing plans so that they would go along with the dodge of the company. it is important that the company is staffed with the right amount of people so that the strategic operational and functional goals of the company can be met.It has been realized by a lot companies that the HR plans are very important if the organization wants to have strategic success. For example, companies deal Nokia and Apple it is important to have strategic plans because it would help the companies by developing new products and introducing them as quickly as possible in the market. It is only possible when the company is staffed with the right kind of people. Without the right people outline based opportunities would be lost to a better staffed organization like Motorola and IBM (Werther Davis 1 996).Recruitment is nonpareil of the important activities of the HR department. Recruitment is mostly concerned with attracting and purpose individuals who are capable for employment. The recruitment process begins s when the new recruits are sought and this process ends when the applicant submits and application. People who find new recruits are called recruiters. The process of hiring is faced with some limitations like costs, incentives, job requirements, policies of the company, environment conditions, insufficient and scarce resources and EEO legislation etc.Recruitment is done in two ways 1) essential channel which includes job posting program and departing employees 2) External channel which includes advertising, walk-in and write-ins, employee referrals, state employment agencies, open house, international recruiting, temporary help agencies and leased employees etc (Recruitment Process) natural selection is one of the activities of the HR department. Selection is defin ed as a process that is based on specific steps that are used to describe that which individual should be hired. This process starts when the individual applies for the job and it ends when the final decision is made by the management of the company. the selection process is also faced with some limitations like EEO legislation, Workforce diversity and external prohibitions etc. ( The Selection Process). The selection process is based on eight steps and these steps are as follows- preliminary reception of applications Employment tests Selection interview Preference and background checks Medical tests Supervisory interview Realistic job preview Hiring decision Orientation, Placement and judicial separation is considered to be an activity of HRM. Orientation can be defined as when the new recruits are given an everywhereview of the company on the first day of work. The orientation program of the company is based on the following goals 1) the pride of belonging to the company 2) creates awareness about the companys business 3) emphasize on customer focus and service 4) helps to reduce the concerns that are related to the job 5) helps with development of a team member and 6) helps to establish personal growth etc.Placement can be defined as the work activities that are assigned to a new employee. The role of HR department here is that to advice the managers of the company about the rules and the regulations and it also provide counseling to the employees. Placement is based on 3 classes 1) promotion, transfer and demotion. Separation can be defined as a decision where the individual and the company must part. Separation process starts either the employer or the employee. The role of HR department is to find a method which is fitting for conducting a separation in such a way that it reduces the harmful factors that might affect the company. Training Development is concerned with that placing the employees in a job does not give the company the surety that the individual would be successful in his or her job. Training and development programs are considered important for all the employees. The promissory note between training and development is that training is for now and development is for the future. For example at Corning Glass there are a lot of learning opportunities that range from skilled orientation training to seminars that deal with development issues, they basically help the managers to face the issues that might arise in the future. The employees of the company are not daunted that the class is intended for training or development. It is only concerned with whether the program has helped the employees and the organization or not (Training and Development). Training and development are based on the following steps Need assessment Learning principles Program content Training and development objectives There are some challenges that are faced by HR department due to training and development. For example cost effectiven ess, desired program content, learning principles and appropriateness of the facilities etc. The role of HR department over here is that it helps to prepare the individuals for future job responsibilities. And it also attempts stops the employees from obsolesce, work force diversity, technological changes, affirmation action and employee turnover etc.(Werther Davis 1996) Career planning is one of the activities of the HRM. When the department is doing career planning it is mostly concerned with whether the companys training and development programs has helped the employees with promotion chances or not. A couple of decades agone career planning was seen as an individuals problem but now career planning is seen as the HR departments problem. The HR managers and specialist see career planning as a way to meet the internal staffing needs. The involvement of the HR department in career planning is increasing everyday due to its benefits like low turnover, satisfies the needs of the empl oyees, personal growth, helps with workforce diversity and decrease hoarding etc. Performance appraisal is one of the major activities of HRM. Performance appraisal can be defined as evaluating an employees current or past performances relative to his or her performance standard. In this competitive world companies require a high performance so that they can become dominant leaders in their perspective markets. And at the same(p) time employees also need feedback on their performance so that it can act as a guide for their future behavior and responsibilities. There are some challenges that are faced by the HR department regarding the performance appraisal like legal constraints, raters biases regarding the employee based on halo effect or personal prejudice or even cross cultural biases etc. It has been vied been viewed by the experts that when there is poor performance throughout the company it creates huge problems with the human resource management activities(Grote Grote 1996).Wa ges and Salaries are concerned with compensation. Compensation can be defined as something the employees receive in their return of their input to the organization. Without proper compensation the employees of the company would leave and it would be difficult for the company to hire new recruits. The result of pay dissatisfaction can harm the productivity of the company and can also harm the quality of work life as well. There are some challenges that affect the compensation plan like wage rates, union, constraints by the government and equal pay etc. ( Salary and Wages)Security, Safety and Health is considered a challenge for the HR experts that how to comply proactively with the minimum costs for the organization and to provide with the minimum of costs for the organization and to provide the greatest of benefits to its employees, whereas in the area of employee security and health companies have taken a proactive action. It is the role of the HR department to face the challenges that arise overtime. The HR is usually faced with 2 kinds of challenges 1) Internal challenges which are also the organizational challenges.Internal challenges for example would include union, information systems, organizational conflicts between the company and the employees. 2) External challenges are those problems that exist due to the changing environment and the management has no control over it. tilt in the companys environment actually evolves at different kinds of rates. External challenges would include workforce diversity, technology, economics and government. The HR department has to follow 4 steps so that they can overcome the external challenges. They are as follows Monitor the environment Evaluate the impact of the challenges on the company Take proactive measures that is implement approaches that would help the company to achieve its goals Obtain and analyze the feedback. It is the role of the HR department to achieve a balance between the trade-offs of efficien cy and effectiveness. For example when jobs are under specialized the job design may be simplified by decreasing the number of tasks and if the job is over specialized the number of job tasks can be enriched and expanded by the human resource department.
